3 Mistakes That Kill Your Email Marketing

But let’s get into today’s email…

If I’m honest, I’ve never audited an Ecom brands Klaviyo account and not seen one of these 3 issues.

It doesn’t matter if they’ve told me “we’re happy with our email marketing” or “our agency is great” or “my internal person does a great job” or whatever other BS they try to tell me.

They’re all making at least one of these mistakes…

Mistake 1: Double opt-in (or a low converting popup)

If you follow me on twitter you’ve probably seen me rant about double opt-in a few times. I think it’s stupid and you should never have it enabled.

Some brands have it enabled on purpose because they think it’ll stop bots and help their deliverability (they’re 25% right).

Others don’t even know they’ve got it turned on.

This is a problem because it’s not only keeping out bots, it’s keeping out humans.

Having this setting enabled is the single easiest way to kill your list growth and throw money away.

Mistake 2: Missing Flows

Brands will have a Welcome Flow, Abandoned Cart, and Post-Purchase Thank You and have the nerve to say “Yep, we’ve got all our flows set up!”

Yet they’re leaving at least 50% of the potential flow revenue on the table.

Even the flows they do have won’t be built out completely. They might have 3-4 emails for each of those flows as opposed to the 7-8 I’d recommend.

Mistake 3: Low Campaign Volume

Pretty self-explanatory.

Most brands aren’t sending enough emails.

If they are, chances are they’re sending too many discounts.

I recommend starting at 3 emails per week. If your metrics are healthy, you can try to increase it from there.

No more than 2 discounts per month.

These 3 things alone are what stops brands from having 40% or 50% of their total revenue coming from email marketing.
