Marketing Lessons in Rap Beef
Team, idk if you’re as interested in the current rap beef as I am - but we’re using that to tie into an email marketing lesson today.
If you don’t know what I’m referring to you either live under a rock or your social media algorithms are drastically different to mine…
Anyway, you don’t need to be up to date with the beef to take a lesson out of this email.
Since the beef started a couple of weeks ago I’ve taken a lot of notice of the fans, and the general public opinion on who’s winning.
It started out with everyone excited to get some good music from 2 great artists. Everyone was just a fan that wanted to be entertained by a good show.
Right now you can see 2 clear camps.
On one side you’ve got Drake fans.
On the other side you’ve got Kendrick fans (+ Drake haters).
Every time a new song drops the goal posts move to fit the narrative of those camps.
Drake fans find a way to discredit what Kendrick says and vice versa.
What I realised the longer this went on is that fans picked their side from the start. Nothing each of the artists said was going to change that.
Instead, they will change the way they perceive reality to fit with what they want.
This is called confirmation bias.
As wikipedia says…
Confirmation bias is the tendency to search for, interpret, favour, and recall information in a way that confirms or supports one's prior beliefs or values.
This means that although the rap beef is entertaining and I’m loving every minute…
There’s not going to be a ‘winner’. Unless someone goes to prison or something. Maybe then we’ll have a winner.
But here’s the lesson:
You can use confirmation bias in the marketing of your brand. Especially in email marketing.
If you build a brand that your customers love, they will defend you no matter what.
The best way to build that deep rooted loyalty is by having a great product and staying top of mind.
The best and cheapest way to stay top of mind is through email marketing.
Beyond that, your email list is warm traffic. You can use what you know about them to please their confirmation bias and create a positive feedback loop that strengthens customer loyalty even further.

PS: I’m a huge Drake stan and yes I think he’s winning.
